HAS-BLED Score

• Used to assess bleeding risk in a patient with atrial fibrillation started with anticoagulant

Components

  • Hypertension (SBP >160 mmHg) — 1 point
  • Abnormal renal and or liver function — 1 or 2 points (1 point for each abnormality)
    • Renal: ESRF, requiring dialysis /renal transplant
    • Liver: cirrhosis / serum bilirubin 2×normal / AST or ALT 3×normal
  • Stroke — 1 point
  • Bleeding — 1 point
    • Requiring hospitalization / blood transfusion
    • Hb reduced >2 g/dL
    • Haemorrhagic stroke
  • Labile INR (<60% in therapeutic range) — 1 point
  • Elderly, i.e. >65 years old — 1 point
  • Drugs and/or alcohol excess — 1 or 2 points (1 point for each — drug / alcohol excess)

Interpretation

• Score ≥3 suggests high risk / caution in using warfarin
