Introduction
- An antispasmodic medication, which has only peripheral anticholinergic action
- It relieves pain by acting on the muscle spasm which causes the pain
- It acts on smooth muscles in gastrointestinal, biliary and genito-urinary tracts
Dosage
Oral
- Children >6 years & adults: 10 mg TDS (usual dose)
Contraindications
- Myasthenia gravis
- Mechanical stenosis in gastrointestinal tract
- Ileus (paralytic / obstructive)
- Hypersensitivity to Hyoscine-N-butylbromide
Adverse Effects
Anticholinergic effects of Buscopan is generally mild and self-limited.
- Anaphylactic reaction
- Tachycardia
- Dry mouth
- Urinary retention
