Buscopan® (Hyoscine-N-butylbromide)

Introduction

  • An antispasmodic medication, which has only peripheral anticholinergic action
  • It relieves pain by acting on the muscle spasm which causes the pain
  • It acts on smooth muscles in gastrointestinal, biliary and genito-urinary tracts

Dosage

Oral

  • Children >6 years & adults: 10 mg TDS (usual dose)

Contraindications

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Mechanical stenosis in gastrointestinal tract
  • Ileus (paralytic / obstructive)
  • Hypersensitivity to Hyoscine-N-butylbromide

Adverse Effects

Anticholinergic effects of Buscopan is generally mild and self-limited.

  • Anaphylactic reaction
  • Tachycardia
  • Dry mouth
  • Urinary retention
